Loretta Kuhland, MA, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CCP, DTM

     Loretta Farrell-Kuhland is a high-energy, business executive with extensive strategic and hands-on experience in business operations, human resources, marketing, and management processes. She has worked in several business environments – global companies, start ups, for-profit, not-for-profit, unionized. Loretta has supported specific business lines, as well as worked within corporate departments. 

     One key to Loretta’s success is understanding current operations within the context of specific business objectives. This insight – coupled with her ability to work within and across functions and staff levels – allows her to build consensus to achieve business goals, and drive cultural and behavioral change. Her track record is a proven one, creating and leading (local, regional, and international) teams, programs, and projects.

     Through her coaching approach, Loretta has had significant impact on manager and employee performance. Her coaching has spanned skills needed for success in leadership, performance management challenges and strategies, operational and marketing effectiveness, team interaction, and organization culture and practices.


     Prior to relaunching Performance Management ServicesTM in 2013, Loretta held several leadership roles in diverse business environments:
  • Managing Director for Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. (a global real estate firm). Led a team of 27 U.S. Operations Managers, in 40 offices across the U.S., through matrix reporting. Functional scope included finance, accounting, human resources, office services, research, marketing, and new business initiatives.  Projects included: determined and implemented organizational efficiencies for branch operations through business process analysis and reengineering, organization redesign, position alignment, etc.; orchestrated the development and led the implementation of policies, processes, programs, and communications between corporate departments and branch offices to resolve issues, improve operational efficiencies, and remove obstacles to success; developed performance evaluations and training programs to ensure peak staff performance.
  • Vice President for Credit Suisse First Boston (a global investment bank) for a technology group that supported fixed income and derivatives traders worldwide. As the Chief Administrative Officer for this division of 700+ employees in eight countries: defined, developed, and managed a global administration function that handled budgets, human resources, corporate governance, and operations. Sample projects included: partnered with finance on a divisional restructure; created a new performance management tool and process; organized quarterly meetings to increase understanding of country differences in scope and regulations that impacted service delivery; delivered a manager training and exchange program.  
  • Director of Administration and Human Resources, for First Manhattan Consulting Group (a management-consulting firm that specializes in the financial services industry). Member of the senior management team responsible for: day-to-day resolution of issues and management of human resources, corporate/legal administration, and several operational teams (e.g., offices and facilities management, research, marketing administration, technology support). Developed all aspects of human resource systems to match the culture and growth of the firm, e.g., capacity planning, staffing, recruitment and selection, staff development, performance improvement, compensation and benefits, conflict management, executive coaching. 
  • Deputy Executive Director, Human Resources for the Center for Disability Services, Inc. (government-funded, not-for-profit agency). Led a 25-person human resources team and related functions, programs, and projects for a 2,500-employee organization. Partnered with the business divisions on organizational design, compensation programs, employee relations, recruitment, retention, reductions in workforce, staff development. Projects included: shifting the agency’s focus to pay-for-performance that included the creation and implementation of divisional compensation programs and complimentary performance evaluation programs ; re-engineered the recruitment function, developed service level agreements and divisional-specific recruiting strategies, reducing vacancy rate by 20%; led the agency’s team in collective bargaining relations and contract negotiations; with the Foundation team developed donor strategies for six target groups and updated the data collection system and practices; led a cross-divisional Management Training Committee that developed 10 curriculums, trained over 200 supervisors, and developed and launched a New Supervisor Guide and Orientation program. As Site Administrator, revised evacuation, security, and other operational procedures to ensure the safety of consumers, staff, and property.  

     After relocating to the Capital District of NY State from NY City, Loretta formed Performance Management ServicesTM – a consulting firm focusing on business operations and manager effectiveness. Projects have included:
  • Operational assessment and recommendations in support of an organizations shifting leadership
  • Developed a revenue-expense model for new business initiatives 
  • Provided marketing and presentation coaching for a new business initiative
  • Developed and managed the HR infrastructure for growing start up; worked with consultants to develop the IPO business plan
  • Acting VP of Customer Service and Production, implementing a company 'University’ to streamline client training on product functionality
  • Led the negotiation team for two collective bargaining agreement contract negotiations
  • Employee handbook update and policy development
  • Technology audit, RFP process, summary, recommendation, and presentation 
  • Various professional development and team management coaching assignments
  • Presentations to professional groups; sample topics: Making the Business Case, Performance Conversations 
  • Taught Organizational Design & Development, The Sage Colleges, for the Graduate Business program.

    In addition to running Performance Management ServicesTM, Loretta is a consultant with PinnacleHR, LLC and a trainer for Balancing Life Issues.

Education and Professional Development

     Loretta holds a Master of Arts from Syracuse University.  She completed all course work and examinations required for a Ph.D. in Sociology (with a specialization in the Sociology of Education). Loretta has participated in a multitude of management development and financial planning programs, and is a proud graduate of the NYS Dispute Resolution Association's Conflict Coaching in the Workplace, the National Coalition Building Institute, and the Albany (NY) Chamber of Commerce Capital Leadership program.  
    Loretta is a certifiied strategic-level HR practitioner (SPHR), SHRM-SCP, as well as a Certified Coach Practioner.

  • Toastmasters International Distinguished Toastmaster; President's Award for Area Governor 2011-2012, Division Governor 2012-2013; Club Coach; Club Mentor; past Club President & VP of Education
  • Awarded NY Area 'Employee of the Year' at Cushman & Wakefield

  • Led several committees including:  Learning Strategies, Management Training, and co-chair of Cerebral Palsy Association of NY State's HR Committee
  • Appointed as an active participant to multiple committees – e.g., Business Council of NY State HR Focus Group, Pandemic Emergency Planning Committee and Incident Command Center, Business Continuity Committee that developed a National Emergency Preparedness Plan, Steering Committee for the expansion of HRIS functionality, Education and Development Committee, several Diversity Steering Committees; Town of Princetown Ethics Committee and Zoning Review Committee.
